Frequently Asked Questions
Cool things you can do with i-ERM.com!
Why are some words blue and highlighted in yellow - that aren't hyperlinks?
Words that look like this will pop up context sensitive help when you hover over them!
When I click Back on my browser, it doesn't work on your site. Why?
i-ERM.com is a dynamic website. This means that the application has a persistent memory of what you are doing and where you are. So, we don't want any cached versions of our dynamic content pages being loaded - because the pages (and your data) might have changed since you were last on that page. To keep all of this straight in the computer's memory, we disable the effect the back button has on the browser.
What does the triangle appear by the left nav Search link for?
This is "repeat last search" button that appears when you have an existing search in memory. So, if you want to check out something else at our site for a moment, you can pick up right where you left off!
Do you know my password?
Nope. We can't even decrypt it! We use MD5, which is a one-way encryption method to secure your passwords. We have no idea what they are because we don't store the actual password, we store the encryption string. All we can do is reset your password.
I just entered a recipe and it didn't increase the total in i-ERM.com?
Actually, this is completely normal. For performance reasons, we store lots of things like this in cache (memory) and refresh it about every 10 minutes.
How do I get to the Itemized Shopping List©?
When you are viewing your recipe groups, the description is a hyperlink. When you click on this screen, it takes you to a screen where you can specify different quantities for each recipe (if desired). Once you have the desired total servings for all recipes, you just click the button titled [Itemized Shopping List]. View the Demo if you would like more information!
Why can't I just cut/paste my recipe as a big chunk of text to make it eaiser to enter into the database?
i-ERM.com can process recipes completely different than other sites because we took the time to design a recipe database, not just an on-line viewable cookbook. These other sites can barely function as a search engine with their recipe "database", while we truely elementize the data - which makes it workable. i-ERM.com can resize, combine, make recipe groups and more, but only because we elementized the entire recipe (including the ingredients)! And that's another reason we have moderators - to review and format every recipe so it can be processed by i-ERM.com! However, we are are planning to eventually build a recipe "translator/analyzer" like the PC version of ERM has to make recipe entry a snap.
There's lots of other recipe websites that are free, why pay for i-ERM.com membership?
Well, for starters, very few allow you to contribute your recipes - go ahead...look around. Also, we not only allow you to enter your own, but we have a user voting system that will allow all recipes to be rated on taste and difficulty by other users! And not to end there, we provide many cool features that the other sites will NEVER have because their recipes aren't elementized and can't be "processed" like ours can. i-ERM.com was (and is still being) developed by an expert application developer, so a lot of time was put into the database layout and finding a way to enter recipes easily, but also keep them formatted so they are able to be analyzed programatically.
Can I delete a recipe (because it's a dup, or whatever reason)?
Yes, but only if you personally entered it; or if it is a new/unapproved recipe and you are a moderator. But no matter what type of user you are, the directions and ingredients must be individually removed first. As a safety precaution, nobody at i-ERM.com can ever delete a recipe that has any existing directions or ingredients.
Why do my recipes become unapproved every time I edit them?
All recipes need "approved" by a moderator before they can be viewed by the general public because we need to make sure the ingredients were entered accurately (so they can be analyzed properly) and remove any offensive words. i-ERM.com is geared towards the general pubic and we want to keep it that way. Every time you add a recipe or edit a recipe, it becomes unapproved...
Can I become an i-ERM.com moderator? If so, what's in it for me?
If you become an i-ERM.com moderator, you will be able to edit any recipes that have not yet been approved. Periodically, we will review the recipes you approved/reviewed and validate your work. Based on how much and how well you do, we will extend the Expire Date on your advanced account, usually by 1 day for every few recipes reviewed (with a max at 30 days/month). Contact Us for more information.
This site is awesome. Is there seriously only 1 developer?
Yes (this was a real question!). Although my wife does help with images and some general layout/content, I wrote every line of code for iERM myself. I've specialized in web development for a large bank for over 7 years now, so I've become very efficient at what I do. Truthfully, if internet Poker weren't illegal now, this site wouldn't exist! I used to kill time trying to beat the cheats on-line, but when G.W. made it illegal to play poker on-line in the US last October, I had to find something else to challenge me outside of work... And i-ERM.com was born!
